Year 1 have unpicked the lives of two significant women this week. We began the week by learning the story of the space race between USSR and USA. Part of the space race story included Mae Jemison, who was the first black female astronaut. We learnt about her life and how she has continued to be a significant person after her time in space. Mae took a photo of Bessie Coleman with her into space. She learnt more about Bessie. Bessie was a stunt pilot who stood up for equality and being treated fairly, despite the colour of her skin. We made aeroplanes and tried to use them to complete tricks like Bessie.
