Year 6 History Week

October is Black History Month and the Year 6 classes have been involved in a weeklong project about an inspirational figure. The person Year 6 have studied is the singer, songwriter, and activist Nina Simone. Both classes had a day looking at the life and work of this historical figure including learning about the Civil Rights Movement in 1960s America. They then produced posters exploring the key questions they decided to explore and included timelines detailing the key events in Nina’s life. The theme continued through the week as we had an Art lesson inspired by a Cultural Festival that Nina Simone played at, we asked the question- Who would we choose to play a festival celebrating different arts and cultures? In music we looked at one of Nina’s songs, ‘Colour is a Beautiful Thin’, and composed our own spoken word performances using the wide variety of languages that we celebrate having at our school.'
